Nataliia Derkach. Sociopragmatic Features of English Proverb Intonation

Nataliia Derkach. Sociopragmatic Features of English Proverb Intonation

The monograph examines variation in the intonation of English proverbs under the influence of sociopragmatic factors: the proverb’s communicative and pragmatic function, the communication situation and the speaker’s communicative role in relation to the listener. A content matrix of isomorphic socially significant and linguistic characteristics of small-form texts shows how closely other small-form genres resemble proverbs in terms of shared features. The work substantiates a general model of the oral actualisation of English proverbs and presents experimentally established invariant intonation patterns associated with their functions of influence, evaluation and generalisation. It identifies the effects of sociocultural factors and the speaker’s communicative role relative to the listener on proverb intonation.
