The monograph examines how prosodic means establish coherence in the English prose fable. It proposes an interpretive model of the mental and speech procedures through which speakers actualise a fable and listeners decode its coherence. Functional, structural and semantic characteristics of the fable are systematised to explain the interaction of prosodic means of textual coherence.
A new method of plot analysis is proposed for fables with different pragmatic orientations and positive or negative ethical ideas. Invariant and variant realisations of the intonation model of coherence in the English prose fable are established experimentally.
