The dissertation uses a functional and communicative approach to phonetic phenomena to establish the intonational characteristics of landscape descriptions in English. It refines their definition, position and role in English literary texts.
Descriptions are classified by geographical setting, landscape type, season, time of day, degree of dynamism, position within the text, length and level of emotional and pragmatic potential.
A model is developed of the interaction of linguistic units involved in descriptive passages, including both aligned and differently directed interactions of language means.
Invariant and variant intonation patterns of English landscape descriptions are established experimentally and presented according to description type and kind and to high, medium or low emotional and pragmatic potential.
