The monograph presents the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the author’s energetic theory of speech, based on the principle of conserving an utterance’s emotional and pragmatic potential. It explains a functional and level-based approach to the interaction of emotion and pragmatics in spoken and written discourse. The work substantiates methods and a quantitative criterion for assessing the actualisation of emotional and pragmatic potential in utterances, text fragments and speech pauses. It develops methodological premises and methods for further energetic studies of the suggestive potential of textual rhythm, works combining speech and music, and combinations of segmental units and pauses. Results of experimental testing of the theory’s main propositions are presented.
