Congratulations to Valentyna Marchenko on her successful dissertation defence

On 2 December 2016, Valentyna Volodymyrivna Marchenko successfully defended her Candidate of Philological Sciences dissertation at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. We warmly congratulate her and her supervisor, Alla Andriivna Kalyta.

The original study, “Communicative and cognitive features of the functioning of intonation in English speech-and-music works (an experimental phonetic study)”, attracted considerable academic interest and lively discussion. We wish the researcher further productive work and discoveries, particularly in studying the relationship between speech intonation and music.

Abstract: based on a functional and communicative approach to phonetic phenomena, the study identifies the communicative and cognitive characteristics of intonation in English speech-and-music works. These works are classified by communication type, dominant intonation model, interaction of text and music, relationship between lexical and semantic content and major/minor structures, and degree of emotional and pragmatic potential.

Definitions of speech-and-music communication, speech-and-music works and song discourse are refined. A synergetic model of the production and actualization of these works by the speaker is constructed. Four decoding models are substantiated: balanced interaction among linguistic and musical means, dominance of speech components, dominance of musical components, and a reverse decoding scheme.

Experiments establish invariant and variant intonation models of English speech-and-music works in formal, informal and intimate communication.
