We warmly congratulate Larysa Ivanivna Taranenko on completing a demanding research project and successfully defending her dissertation for the Doctor of Philological Sciences degree in Germanic languages, specialty 10.02.04. The defence took place on 30 May 2016 before Specialized Academic Council D 64.051.27 at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
Dissertation abstract: using a new functional and energetic approach to phonetic phenomena, the study identifies prosodic features of the spoken actualization of short English folklore texts determined by structural, communicative and cognitive, and emotional and pragmatic factors.
The texts are classified by communicative and pragmatic orientation into three broad groups: spiritual and ideological texts (myths and legends), cultural and everyday texts (fairy tales and proverbs), and creative and instructive texts (riddles, parables and jokes). Definitions of these genres are refined, their conceptual actualization space is modelled, and unified algorithmic plot-development models are proposed.
The study substantiates synergetic models of the self-development of phonoconcepts and of the psychoenergetic mechanism through which folklore texts exert a suggestive effect on listeners. It constructs energograms of spoken plot elements using a quantitative K-criterion of emotional and pragmatic potential and identifies typical intonational and energetic models.
Experiments establish invariant and variant realizations of intonation models in short English folklore texts. Their parameters are described within structural plot components and at their boundaries.
Keywords: algorithmic plot model; short English folklore texts; auditory and acoustic analysis; emotional and pragmatic potential; energogram; invariant and variant intonation models; prosodic means.
